Shell Guide — Season 2
Sentinel
SEASON 2: NIGHTFALL · UPDATED JUNE 2026 · TIERLISTHQ
Sentinel is Marathon's eighth Runner Shell, arriving with Season 2: Nightfall on June 2, 2026. It fills a role no existing shell covers — pure space control. Where every other shell asks you to adapt to a situation, Sentinel forces the situation to come to you.
Role
Territory anchor and defensive specialist. Sentinel's entire kit is built around controlling chokepoints before a fight starts. If you want to decide where a fight happens, Sentinel does that better than anyone. If you need to push aggressively or self-sustain in solo play, pick something else.
Abilities
Prime Ability
Defender System
Activates a temporary personal shield that provides explosive immunity and denies an area to enemies. While active, Sentinel cannot be moved by explosions or explosive damage. Charged uses — a coordinated barrage can drain it entirely. Once depleted, Sentinel has no explosive defence until the ability recharges.
Tactical Ability
Snare Mine
Places a proximity-triggered mine that slows and damages enemies who pass through it. Sentinel carries multiple charges. Friendly fire — mines activate on squadmates. Always call out placements before placing. In Night Marsh, mines placed at entry points to lit corridors are extremely difficult for opponents to spot.
Trait
Prey Tracker
Directional scanning ability that reveals enemy positions within a conical zone ahead of Sentinel. Directional only — does not provide 360-degree awareness like Recon's scanning. Using your flashlight simultaneously while scoping Prey Tracker broadcasts your position to every squad watching. In Night Marsh: choose one or the other. Never both at the same time.
When to Pick Sentinel
Sentinel works when your squad commits to a defensive identity and communicates mine placements clearly. The shell rewards players who read the map, predict opponent routes, and control pace. Do not pick Sentinel if your squad is going to sprint around the zone — the kit only works when you force opponents into your setup.
Night Marsh is Sentinel's best map
Darkness limits visibility for everyone. Snare Mines placed at corridor entry points are nearly invisible at range. Prey Tracker gives you positional information opponents can't easily replicate. If you play Night Marsh regularly, Sentinel's value increases significantly compared to the standard maps.
Counters
Thief
High mobility allows Thief to route entirely around mine placements. The hardest counter to Sentinel in the game. Thief players who know common Sentinel chokepoint positions can completely neutralise the kit.
Assassin
Invisibility allows Assassin to push through mine fields safely. Smoke can deny Sentinel's Prey Tracker line of sight. Assassin punishes Sentinel who relies purely on mines without active ability use.
Recon
Recon's scanning gives squads Sentinel's positional data before engaging. Informed squads can route around mine placements deliberately rather than walking into them blind.
Team Compositions
Sentinel works best in squad compositions that already have aggression and information covered. The ideal composition pairs Sentinel's area denial with Recon's scanning and Triage's sustain — a squad that knows where enemies are, can't be easily revived through, and punishes pushes with mines and the Defender System.
Friendly fire warning
Snare Mines trigger on teammates. Always communicate mine positions before placing. Squads without clear callouts will lose players to their own Sentinel's mines. This is the most common new player mistake with the shell.
