System Guide — Season 2

The Cradle

SEASON 2: NIGHTFALL · UPDATED JUNE 2026 · TIERLISTHQ

The Cradle is Marathon Season 2's complete replacement for the Season 1 faction progression system. In Season 1, progression was tied to ranking up specific factions — a linear grind that locked players into build paths early. The Cradle replaces this with a flexible Energy economy that you fully control and can reset at any time.

How It Works

STEP 01
Loot anything. Every item you find on Tau Ceti IV has value under The Cradle — weapons, implants, mods, gear you would normally vendor. Nothing is worthless.
STEP 02
Convert to Energy. Any item you choose not to keep can be converted into Energy. Higher rarity items generate more Energy per conversion.
STEP 03
Invest in stats. Energy buys stat points across six categories. Points increase your Runner's performance in those areas directly.
STEP 04
Reset whenever. Stat point allocation can be fully reset at any time during the season at no cost. Energy is fully refunded — no penalty for experimenting.

The key difference from Season 1

Season 1's faction system forced you to commit to a progression path early and heavily penalised switching. The Cradle removes that entirely. You can rebuild your stat layout around a different playstyle whenever the meta shifts — or whenever you want to experiment with a different shell.

The Six Stats

Strength Increases combat output — damage, ability effectiveness in offensive scenarios. Primary stat for aggressive shells like Destroyer and Vandal.
Endurance Increases survivability — health pool, damage resistance, and recovery. Valuable for any shell operating in high-threat positions.
Support Enhances team utility abilities — Med-Drone effectiveness, scan range, and team buff duration. Primary stat for Triage and Recon players.
Dexterity Improves mobility and speed — movement speed, ability cooldown rate, and extraction efficiency. Amplifies Thief and Vandal kits significantly.
Two others Bungie has not prominently labelled the remaining two stats as of Season 2 launch. Community documentation is ongoing — check back as the season develops.

What This Means for the Meta

The Cradle's reset mechanic means the meta can shift faster than in Season 1 because players can adapt their stat investments without a full grind reset. If a patch changes a shell's viability, you can reallocate within the same session. This also means shell-switching is more viable than before — investing in Support one week and rebuilding into Dexterity the next costs nothing except the time spent looting for Energy.
